Veg roll, also known as the veg spring roll, originated mainly from Chinese cuisine and has become popular in almost every Asian country. One can find numerous versions of these rolls made in various countries. There is a wide variation in these rolls. Some contain meat while some are pure veg. This food item named Veg roll is believed to originate from northern and eastern China, which has a wheat wrapper, initially which was similar to a pancake. It is known to be filled with fresh vegetables from mainly the first Spring crop and celebrated the season, and that gave rise to the name {veg roll}.
It is uniquely a Northern Irish delicacy, made up of cuts of lean beef and which is seasoned with fresh herbs and veggies such as leeks, onions, and tomatoes. Kids in India mainly love this dish as it is an easy and time-consuming snack to relish.
Veg Roll Recipe Ingredients:
- 1 cup of atta heaped/ whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp of oil
- Salt as per your need
- ⅓ warm water
- For the filling:
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- ½ garlic cloves chopped finely
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- 3 to 4 cups of cabbage/ any green veggies { your choice}
- 1 cup bell peppers [must]
- 1 chili slit
- ¼ teaspoon coarsely crushed pepper
- Salt as per need
- ½ tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp soya sauce
- Sauces: Any sauce of your choice { Garlic sauce/ tomato sauce /chili sauce or mayo is preferred mainly for veg rolls}
Veg Roll Recipe Instructions:
For Tortillas:
- One can start making the veg roll with the first step to make the tortillas/ Rotis.
- Add flour, oil, and salt to a bowl to make a soft dough using water as per your need. One must knead it very well until it is smooth and pliable. Set this aside until the main stuffing is ready
- Divide the dough into 4 to 5 equal parts, and you must dust the roll with some atta to make it non-sticky
- One must roll the dough evenly and heat a griddle on medium heat.
- To make a good tortilla or roti, you should flip the roti when you see bubbles and gently press with a spatula so the tortilla becomes soft.
- Let the tortillas cool for some time and prepare for the filling till then.
For the Filling :
- The first step is to heat some oil in a pan, saute garlic and chili until aromatic
- Add some veggies and saute them on a very high flame till they are partially cooked
- Then add pepper, sauce {your choice}, and vinegar. Sprinkle some salt over it.
Making Veg Rolls:
- Smear some olive oil thinly over the roti. Spread your favorite sauces over the roti, including the edges of it.
- Then place the veggies on one side and fold both the sides to seal evenly.
- Begin to roll tightly to make a perfect roll.
- Halve the veg rolls and roll in butter paper.
- Since these rolls are flooded with sauces, they are not firm, so it is better to cut them into 2 pieces.
- The above recipe will help you make the best-tasting crispy rolls. One loves serving these rolls with Asian sweet and hot red chili sauce or with homemade dips, preferably. Many people also have these with a cup of tea/ coffee or any other drinks during weekends or monsoons, as these rolls are generally served as starters or appetizers before any meal.

- Vegetables used should be either green veggies or veggies like onion, cauliflowers, peas, and broccoli could be used.
- Roti/ Wheat/Maida/Tortillas {any of your choice}
- Any sauce of your choice could be used, For example, chili sauce, tomato sauce, mayo, or schezwan sauce to spice it up.
- A green chutney may not go well for these veg rolls since the filling is made in Chinese style.
