Missi roti is a north Indian flatbread that looks and tastes delicious. It is simple to prepare. Missi Rotis are usually not eaten daily as an accompaniment with lunch or dinner but are good alternative options for some days. You do not want to eat the regular wheat flour roti or rice for lunch or dinner. Missi Roti is a highly healthy and different addition to your breadbasket.

Missi roti can be eaten with any gravy or curry-based dish. It can be paired with black lentils (kali masoor ki dal). It can also be paired with arhar ki daal (yellow daal). Missi roti is a Punjabi cuisine roti generally made in a tandoor or oven, but it can easily be made on a Tava or flat pan. It is consumed more in the winter season with various curries.

To make Missi roti at your home, you will require the following ingredients:

  1. Gram flour or besan
  2. Wheat flour or aata
  3. Oil (to grease the pan)
  4. Butter (to add on top of the roti once it is ready)
  5. Cumin seeds or jeera
  6. Carom seeds or ajwain
  7. Peppercorns (Kali Mirch)
  8. Pomegranate seeds (dried)
  9. Green chilies (two to three would suffice)
  10. Onions
  11. Turmeric powder
  12. Coriander leaves (fresh)
  13. Salt to taste

Method to Follow for Making Missi Roti: Missi Roti Recipe

Step 1:

Take two cups of gram flour or besan and mix three fourth cups of wheat flour into it (accordingly adjust the ratio if you make missi roti for more people).

Step 2:

Separately, roast cumin seeds or jeera, pomegranate seeds or anardana, carom seeds or ajwain, and peppercorns or kali mirch. Grind these spices into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle.

Step 3:

Cut two to three chilies into fine, small pieces and add them to the flour along with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder, finely chopped onions (one onion), coriander leaves (chopped), and salt. Also, add the powdered spices into the flour.

Now knead the flour into dough by adding water also. Add a tablespoon of oil to your flour so that it binds well. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for fifteen to twenty minutes.

Step 4:

After about twenty minutes, divide the dough into equal portions of circular shapes to make roti out of it, roll each ball using a rolling pin into a round roti.

Heat the Tava put the roti on it, and roast it by greasing the roti with oil. Your roti will be ready in about five minutes. Put a spoon full of white butter on top of your roti to have it in its best version.

Substitutes:

  • In place of oil, you can add ghee. Also, you can put red chili powder in place of green chopped chilies.
  • Pair your missi roti with any sabzi of your choice
  • Missi roti tastes best with Punjabi style kali daal, Sarson ka saag, Rajma, etc.
  • Missi roti can also be made in an oven or tandoor. It is readily available at dhabas.
  • This roti has the authenticity of rich Indian cuisine. It has protein as it is made of gram flour, unlike the roti made of wheat flour.

Post script: you can make missi roti even without adding wheat flour to it. If you are allergic to gluten or do not want to have wheat flour, it will be perfectly fine.

Authentic missi roti is meant to be made of only besan.

  • There are various benefits of eating Missi roti. Missi roti reduces cholesterol. It is Gluten-free and also aids in weight loss. Missi roti is rich in protein as it is made of besan or gram flour.
  • Adding oil and ghee increases the fat quotient of any food, so if you are on a diet or someone who is not a fan of fatty and oily food, you can skip putting ghee and butter in your missi roti and roast it on the Tava with either olive oil or mustard oil. You should also do so if you are a heart patient and need to manage your cholesterol level.
  • Missi roti is an excellent bread variant, although it is not eaten daily in most places. Still, there is no reason why you should not include it in your daily diet. It is more fulfilling than a regular roti because it contains protein that helps you feel full for longer.
  • It will be easier to make missi roti every day for yourself if you store the ground spices in a container because grinding the spices every day will become a task.
